Printers & Connectivity
Hospital networks are often secure and restrictive. Below are the fastest ways to ensure reliable printing.
Quick Setup Paths
Clinic WiFi Available
-
iPad or Surface
-
AirPrint / Canon Print app
-
Same WiFi network
WiFi Restricted or Blocked (common in hospitals)
-
Microsoft Surface or Windows device
-
USB cable directly to printer
-
Print locally (no network required)
Most reliable hospital setup: Surface + USB
Common Issues & Fixes
Printer not showing up
Try:
-
Same network connection
-
Set printer as default
-
Power cycle printer
Cannot connect to secure WiFi
Cause: Firewalls or VLAN restrictions
Fix:
-
Ask IT to approve device
or -
Use USB hardwired printing (recommended)
Labels Misaligned or Scaling Issues
Fix:
-
Use supported Canon printers
-
Confirm Avery 5428 labels
-
Disable manual scaling in printer settings
Best Practices for Smooth Printing
-
Update devices regularly
-
Check ink before sessions
-
Keep printer near workstation
-
Use same network when wireless
-
Use USB when networks are restricted
Printers & Connectivity
Overview
Network and hardware compatibility can sometimes present challenges, especially in environments with strict internet safeguards, such as hospitals and large clinics.
TechJet Tip: If you're unable to access the secured WiFi, TechJet suggests a Surface tablet and a hardwired connection.
See our pathways for supported devices and printers based on access to medical practice WiFi.
Strict network safeguards can present the following connection blockers:
-
Device-to-device communication is often restricted unless approved by IT
-
Wireless printing and device discovery may be blocked
-
Firewalls and VLAN segmentation are common
-
Bluetooth connectivity is often scrambled by firewalls in secure WiFi environments
Troubleshooting Guide
Hospital networks are locked down, and guest WiFi often blocks device-to-device traffic (so an iPad won’t “see” the printer). WiFi Direct can work in small clinics but often struggles in big institutions with lots of interference.
Best Practices
-
Ensure your device and printer are running the latest operating systems.
-
Confirm the printer has sufficient ink before printing.
-
When using WiFi, verify that all devices are connected to the same network.
-
When using a hardwired connection, confirm all cables are securely connected.
Common Issues and Solutions
1. Wireless Printing Challenges
Problem: Unable to connect your Canon Printer to WiFi Network.
Cause: Internet safeguards and firewalls may block devices from connecting.
Solutions:
1. IT Support: Request your IT department to add devices to the approved network.
2. Hardwired Connection: If the printer cannot connect to the WiFi, use a hardwired connection.
Since Apple products can't utilize hardwired connections:
-
Use a Microsoft Surface tablet or another compatible device to connect to the printer.
-
Follow these steps:
-
Connect the Microsoft Surface to the printer via USB.
-
Access the TechJet application on the Surface to create labels.
-
Print directly from the Surface without needing to connect to the hospital secured WiFi.
2. Wireless Printing Challenges
Problem: Printer not recognized by the application.
Cause: Improper connection or network configuration.
Solution:
Reconnect Devices:
-
Ensure the printer and the device (laptop/tablet) are connected to the same network.
-
If using a wired setup (with compatible Windows devices), ensure that the cable is securely connected and the printer is powered on.
Check Printer Status:
-
Confirm the printer is set as the default printer on your device.
-
Ensure there are no error messages on the printer’s display.
